Gender Identity Disorder

Dear Maryln,

I have a little boy in my child care program that enjoys dressing up with the girls. I have provided ties and shirts fire hats, and construction hats, but he likes the dresses. His parents are very concerned. He asks me if he looks beautiful. Please advise!

Geri

Hi Geri,

We know now that there are children who have what is called Gender Identity Disorder. I am not sure if that’s the case here. These are children who are born in the body of a boy or girl but who clearly identify themselves with the opposite sex. I don’t know if that is the case with this boy or if he is just doing it to get attention. Sometimes, like with naughty words, the more attention that is paid to something, the more strongly it is done by the child.

Regardless of the cause, it is very important that he does not receive any negative attention for it. That could have serious consequences for him later in life. It could affect his self-esteem. If he does have this disorder, he cannot help himself. He needs what all children need, lots of love and positive strokes.

Best wishes,
Maryln

Dear Geri,
i have worked in childcare for over 20 years and i have always had boys that wore the froo froo stuff and high heels. i take it was the child is practice dressing and undressing and learning to walk on something new and tell the parents so. we laugh, have fun, and enjoy our day as usual. it has never stopped them from being 'all boy' when it came time to do the 'all boy' things. have fun with it and they will out grow it soon enough.
